Publications for Secondary Schools and Colleges
Some of these will also be relevant in some special schools, in teacher training and to education authority officers. Most of the publications listed below are Guides, typically 20 40 pages. Those with the prefix R are guides mainly concerned with retail information about the cost and availability of resources. Some other guidance is often also given. Those requiring help with the purchase of items not covered by a listed guide should contact our Helpline. We sometimes have older guides, that are not listed because some information will be out of date, but which may nevertheless contain useful ideas. Guides with the code L cover specialist topics, items written since the relevant section of the Laboratory Handbook was completed and other information. Details of equipment may also be included. Publications with the code PS are brief leaflets (typically 2 8 sides), frequently updated, that outline our views on topics of current interest. (All PS documents are available on the secure part of the CLEAPSS web site.)
We have recently started producing some publications, coded E, in electronic format only. This is so that you can use them to print out good-quality diagrams, posters, etc, some in colour, or otherwise to exploit the opportunities that electronic publication offers.Publications are NOT normally available to non-members (but see below).
Members please click here to order or phone +44 (0)1895 251496, fax +44 (0)1895 814372 or write to CLEAPSS, The Gardiner Building, Brunel Science Park, Kingston Lane, Uxbridge UB8 3PQ.
Pricing policy Since April 2005, we have made a break with traditional practice. Paper copies of CLEAPSS publications will no longer be available free of charge to those who should have access to an electronic version on the CLEAPSS Science Publications CD-ROM or the CLEAPSS Design and Technology Publications CD-ROM.Note that this does not affect publications for primary schools as, at present, there is no CD-ROM for primary schools.
We regret having to make these changes but the costs of printing, packing, postage and staff-processing time make a large dent in our budget and since 2007 our rent hasl increased considerably. Either we would have to increase subscriptions substantially (would local authorities and schools continue to subscribe?) or we must save/raise money in other ways.
There will be a minimum order charge, set at a lower level for those who send a cheque with order.
There will also be a handling charge (which includes postage).
New guides and other publications will continue to be available free of charge on paper, as now, until they appear on a CD. New or updated publications will also be on the Members-only part of our web site for free download.
When new editions (but not a minor updating) of Hazcards or Recipe Cards are published, one set will be issued free to each school. Extra copies will be charged for, as now. Any updates will be available for easy printing from the CD-ROM (and on the members-only part of the web site).
The Laboratory Handbook is now updated every year at the time of the new CD-ROM and so paper updates will not in future be issued free of charge, although there is an easy-print facility on the CD which allows schools to print just the changed pages.
The Science Publications CD-ROM is updated annually. One copy is issued free of charge to each school: these are distributed via the local authority for maintained schools, or posted directly to associate members. Extra copies, or replacements for lost or damaged copies, can be purchased.
The Design and Technology Publications CD-ROM is not updated regularly. Any necessary updates are posted on the members-only part of the CLEAPSS web site. One copy of the CD was issued free of charge to each school: these were distributed via the local authority for maintained schools, or posted directly to associate members. Extra copies, or replacements for lost or damaged copies, can be purchased.

CLEAPSS Publications freely available to non-members
Along with the ASE and SSERC, we have produced a document giving guidance for publishers, authors and readers on writing and checking the content of science text books so that important health and safety issues are addressed. To download a copy of Health and Safety Checks on Science Texts (227 kB), click here.
As a result of joint initiatives with the former DfES and the ASE, we are making two of our publications available to establishments that are not members of CLEAPSS. These include guides L228, Technicians and Their Jobs and L14, Designing and Planning Laboratories. If you wish to download L228 (553 kB), click here and L14 (828 kB), click here. Please note that both these publications are on the latest edition of the CLEAPSS Science Publications CD-ROM.
As a result of a further initiative with the former DfES we are also making our guide L93 Managing Ionising Radiations and Radioactive Substances available to non-members, click here. Note that this guide is currently being revised (although the general approach will not change, nor will most of the details) and the new edition will also be available to non-members. The guide is available to members on the current CLEAPSS Science Publications CD-ROM.
